Session 3: Discussion questions

Discussion Questions

1. How can these learning theories be used to guide the design or usage of technological tools?

The learning theories can be used to determine how we expect our students to learn and use the eLearning tool. It will help us understand what role our students have when using the eLearning tool. For instance, if we consider the behaviorist learning theory, students are expected to exhibit the desired behavior of answering the questions correctly. When students use the app based on the behaviorist theory, there would need to be some sort of reward and/or consequence to reinforce the behavior.

Why it’s necessary for an instructional designer/eLearning designer to learn learning theories?
As an instructional designer/ eLearning designer, you need to ensure that what you create does not solely rely on technological knowledge. To integrate technology successfully in the classroom it is important that there is a healthy interaction between content, pedagogy and technology. The eLearning tool should be seen to enhance teaching and by understanding the learning theories, it would help the designer understand how the eLearning tool would be applied in the classroom and what kind of adjustments would be needed.

2. Can you list some examples eLearning or eLearning tools that implied the learning theories?

Behaviorism - Kahoot

Cognitivism - Mindmeister, Ted Ed

Constructivism - Mindmeister, Padlet, Moodle
