Session 3: Creating a digital narrative
Creating a digital narrative
For this task, we have decided to create a tutorial video on how to use Kahoot. Kahoot is defined as a game-based student response system, where teachers become a game show host and students become the competitors (Wang, 2014). The classroom environment is transformed into a game show (Wang, 2014). Players earn points by answering questions in order to appear on the top five on the scoreboard. The competition that arises from competing against each other creates a valuable learning experience for students (Icard, 2014 as cited in Dellos, 2015). In addition, gamification is created through using playful and colourful graphics and audio, which results an increase in engagement (Wang, 2014). This form of game-based learning creates an atmosphere where students are highly engaged and critically thinking (Icard, 2014 as cited in Dellos, 2015).
It is a platform that is beneficial for teachers to engage students when introducing new content or reviewing old content (Thomas, 2014 as cited in Dellos, 2015). Teachers have the ability to collect and review data from the Kahoot, which allows for a better understanding on student’s understanding of the content (Dellos, 2015). Moreover, during the Kahoot, there is time provided for teachers to provide instant feedback on students’ understanding after each question. Once students have answered the question, a bar chart shows the number of students who chose a particular answer. Both opportunities, allow teachers to identify and address any gaps in students’ understanding of the content.
There are four different features that can be used to review any topic. A quiz is made up of a series of questions, which need to be answered within the allotted time. For each question, the player needs to choose the correct answer by clicking on the corresponding symbol. They are given up to 4 choices to choose from. This is similar to a discussion or survey. A jumble can also be created, which requires the players to correctly sequence the pieces given. They merely need to drag and drop the pieces into the correct order.

Media to be used
For the tutorial video, we decided that we would need a mixture of audio, video and graphics. We decided to use an online video making tool called Powtoons. We would include screenshots and record short screencasts of the steps needed to create the relevant Kahoot.
Available resources
We decide to use an animation platform to demonstrate the steps on how to make a Kahoot. We looked through different online tools to create the tutorial video. Through our research, we decided to use Powtoon because of its easy to use features and its free plan provided good features and options.

Feedback mechanism
We plan to create a survey on Google Forms for users to provide their comments and feedback on their experience watching the tutorial video.
The survey is separated into different sections. The first section merely focuses on the overall design of the tutorial video. The second section focuses on the depth and content for each of the Kahoot features. The third section open ended in order to collect the user’s personal comment and feedback.
Storyboard
The tutorial video should last 5 to 10 minutes and should be clear and easy for the user to quickly have a grasp on how to make their own Kahoot.
The tutorial video will be separated into five different parts.
Development Phase
The making of the tutorial video.
Implementation Phase
Feedback received
After creating the tutorial video, we asked our target audience to watch the video and fill in the Google form. We received comments and feedback from 8 different users. We were able to collect useful data and feedback on the quality of our tutorial video. All of the users were able to access the tutorial video via a youtube link.
Based on the results, most of the users found the color usage, keywords and content selected to be meaningful and found it helpful in clarifying the content. The users varied in opinion when it came to the audio choice and narration. At most two users stated that the audio choice and narration needed improvement and one stated that it was not available.
From a scale of 1-5, with 1 being not clear and specific and 5 being clear and specific, 62.5% of the users found that the tutorial video provided clear and specific instructions on how to create the quiz giving a score of 5. While 37.5% found that the tutorial video provided somewhat clear and specific instructions giving a score of 4.
From a scale of 1-5, with 1 being not clear and specific and 5 being clear and specific, 62.5% found that the tutorial video provided clear and specific instructions on how to create a jumble. While 25% found that the tutorial video provided somewhat clear and specific instructions giving a score of 4 and 12.5% were neutral on the clarity and specificity of the instructions giving a score of 3.
From a scale of 1-5, with 1 being not clear and specific and 5 being clear and specific, 75% of the users found that the tutorial video provided clear and specific instructions on how to create a discussion giving a score of 5. While 25% found that the tutorial video provided somewhat clear and specific instructions giving a score of 4.
From a scale of 1-5, with 1 being not clear and specific and 5 being clear and specific, 75% of the users found that the tutorial video provided clear and specific instructions on how to create a survey giving a score of 5. While 25% were neutral on the clarity and specificity of the instructions giving a score of 3.
Based on the results, all of the users felt confident and very confident in creating their own quiz and discussion. Most of the users felt confident and very confident in creating their own survey with only one indicating little confidence. The most varied degree of confidence was shown in creating the jumble. With two users indicating a lower degree of confidence.
All of the users found the advice section at the end of the video relevant.
Most of the users found the advice at the end of the video useful.
All of the users found the tutorial video useful.
Most of the users indicated that they would recommend the tutorial video to others with 87.5% answering yes. Only 12.5% indicated that they would not recommend this tutorial video to others.
Overall feedback left by the users were positive.

Based on the responses, it appears that the tutorial video is missing an audio element of narration. In addition, further adjustments can be made to highlight and emphasize particular points. Minor spelling mistakes need to be corrected.
Evaluation Phase
Based on the survey, it appears that overall the tutorial video was clear and specific for the users to follow and understand. Most of the users indicated confidence in creating their own Kahoot quiz and discussion. It seems that the instructions for the Kahoot survey and jumble need to be reviewed and revised. In particular, the jumble received varied responses from the users. The instructions for the jumble need to be revised in order to make it easier for the users. It may help to explain the purpose of the jumble since out of the four features, it is the most different. In terms of narration, we have decided to recreate the video using Goanimate because of its text-to-speech function. This would allow us to input key pieces of information to be read out and included in the video.

I am really surprised by the research you have done on the development of this video and on the ADDIE model.Really very hard-working!
ReplyDeleteVery nice to "use" Go Animaker with you since I don't have an account for free use. But I am wondering maybe you can design some tricks to make the course more interesting and increase learners' curiosity.
Thanks for sharing!Very useful one!!!
The software you recommend is very interesting and useful. This is very suitable for the modern educational model. I believe that using this software can improve students' interest and efficiency in e-learning. I really like this tool you recommend.
ReplyDeleteI'm very impressed by the video. The design is quite outstanding and the application of ADDIE model is significant. I am totally attracted when watching this video and cannot help my desire of trying to use Kahoot. Also the feedback collection and analysis is quite professional, which must be of great help of afterward improvement on your design. Thanks for sharing! :)
ReplyDeleteI like this application and want to learn how to use it in the class. The whole screen is so colourful, but I feel that the volume of music is as higher as the dubbing. That makes me sometime hard to concentrate on the content. Basically the whole video is divided into four parts. However, the boundaries of each part is not very clear, I am a little bit confused with the abundant information. I suggest that you may emphasise the key word or picture in the beginning of each part and in the middle of the video, the dubbing is not clear.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, I like the design that you put the screen on left and the mobile screen on right, in doing so, It helps to understand what will happen between these two screens while I design my game. Thank you so much.
I feel shocked to see this blog, it has contained so many things which is awesome. You have made so many surveys and the video really impress me. The tables have clearly shown the feedback from the audience and your work of data visualization is stunning. Fantastic!
ReplyDeleteThe video shows us how to create a new kahoot in a very detailed way, which is useful for me to try this software. As for the design, the video is also user friendly, every page is appealing. The analysis of the video is clear to us and it dose have some improvements in their reflection.
ReplyDeleteThe research on Kahoot! game that your group did was amazing! By referring to the feedback, making a quiz is the easiest among the four functions i.e. quiz, jumble, discussion and survey. Therefore, it is easy to be used in the daily learning and teaching. Besides, the advice at the end of the video can give us comments and hence make some improvement for the preparation next time.
ReplyDeleteWow! You have created 2 versions and analysized the results of survey. Actually, all of the other groups did not spend much effort on evaluation, but you have done a good job! According to your analysis, we found that evaluation could provide considerable information for course designer, which cannot be ignored.
ReplyDeleteThe case show detail to apply ADDIE model of ideas. The ideas to learner can get Kahoot features. And the video use funny model to explain Kahoot features for teachers. Information and ideas is easy to learning that it is e-learning was important. Overall, the video will good learning resources.
ReplyDeleteThe blog you did really impressed me with complete informations about each step you did, which shows your hard-working teamwork. I appreciated that you collected and analyzed datas, which we did pay much attention on this part. Thanks for your sharing about Kahoot! It is very useful.
ReplyDeleteThe video is awesome which shows us how to create a new kahoot in a very systemic way. Also, it is impressive by the hard work you have done. Data collected and analyzed are extensive, illustrations are well-structured. Moreover, feedbacks are presenting in table format is good as it is easy for users to follow. The application of ADDIE model is significant. Thanks for sharing about Kahoot! Great job!!
